Brown spots are the result of excess melanin (skin pigmentation). The most common cause of brown spots is long-term sun damage. Prolonged sun exposure over the years can also cause age spots to appear on the arms, legs, and hands. For many people, dark spots are simply a byproduct of normal aging — hence the term “age spots.” As we get older, the spots can darken and become distressing. Fortunately, there is a way to reverse sun damage with the PicoSure laser.
During treatment, Dr. Roberts will administer laser pulses directly to the dark spots. The laser heats up the excess melanin with, which degenerates over the course of a few days, lightening the dark spots. The laser does not damage surrounding skin.
After a few days, you can expect lighter, unblemished skin as the immune system flushes away the dead skin cells from the hyperpigmented areas.
The length of your treatment session will vary depending on the size and number of areas to be treated. While some dark spots may require only a few minutes of treatment time, a larger area of hyperpigmentation may take more time. Although you may experience slight discomfort, the side effects from the laser are minimal, if you experience any at all.
You may require two to four sessions for optimal results, although some smaller spots like freckles or age spots usually only take a single treatment to remove. However, most spots are gone within just two treatments. Ask your doctor how long it might take to remove the spots you’d like treated.
On the face, it can take a week or more for the brown spots to lighten, as the excess melanin is absorbed into the skin and flushed away by the immune system. If PicoSure is applied to other areas of the body, complete removal time can take longer. Most patients report that it takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the spots to dissipate.
