Keep Forgetting to Take the Pill? Consider an IUD for Birth Control

Life is busy and pulling you in every direction, shoving daily duties like taking your birth control pill further down the list of things you actually remember to do. Not that preventing an unwanted pregnancy isn’t a priority, but let’s face it, things pop up that can sometimes force your attention away from this task.

If you’d like to take one thing off your plate of things to remember, an IUD may be just the solution.

Here at Dr. Dennis Roberts’ private practice, we offer a full range of birth control choices to women in the Indio, California, area. In fact, because of the wide variety of options, there’s a birth control solution to meet most every need and lifestyle, but IUDs rank among our most popular.

If you want one less thing to worry about on a daily basis, consider these reasons why an IUD may be a better choice for you than oral contraceptives.

Same method, different delivery

An IUD, which stands for intrauterine device, is a small T-shaped device that we insert into your uterus during a simple, in-office procedure. The IUD slowly releases the hormone progestin into your system to prevent ovulation, and it can work from three to seven years, depending upon the brand we use.

The progestin also works to prevent pregnancy by thickening the mucus on your cervix, which prevents sperm from getting through in case your egg did release. This double protection gives this type of IUD a near-perfect efficacy rate of 99%.

Sperm’s kryptonite

If you’re not keen on a hormonal solution, the IUD comes in another form to prevent pregnancy. While there’s very little that can deter sperm from their single-minded task of finding an egg to fertilize, it turns out they do have their own form of kryptonite — copper.

With an IUD wrapped in copper, the sperm are repelled, putting an end to their mission. This form of protection is equally as effective as the hormonal IUD, with a 99% efficacy rate, and it can last even longer — up to 12 years.

What’s not widely known is that this same IUD can work as emergency contraception up to five days after you’ve had unprotected sex.

Never leave home without it

While the efficacy ratings of IUDs might be enough to convince you of their benefits, there are other things to consider. With an IUD, we simply place the device, and you don’t have to think about it again.

We’ve already discussed how easy it is to forget to take a daily pill, but an IUD also means that you won’t be making monthly trips to your pharmacy or forgetting your pills while you travel. If you’ve ever arrived at the airport only to realize you left your small travel bag on your bed back home, this peace of mind is something worth considering.

A change of heart

Just as you can stop taking the pill when you decide you’re ready to have children, it’s simply a matter of having us remove your IUD to do the same. Again, we do this right in our office, and it takes just minutes. While it may still take a little time for your body to readjust, you’ll have no lingering effects that can jeopardize a future pregnancy.

If you’d like to explore the IUD option further, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Or you can use the online scheduling tool on this website to request an appointment.
